About Likhawat
Shipra Rohatgi, fourth-generation calligrapher
I founded Likhawat in New Delhi in 1999 to keep a family practice alive: beautiful hand lettering, illustration and design for weddings, homes, brands, collectors and students.
The work comes from a lineage that moved from court and commercial lettering into contemporary commissions. Today the studio works across paper, fabric, metal, canvas, wood, walls, ceramics and unusual surfaces that can hold ink or paint.
The story
A family practice, made contemporary
My great-grandfather worked as an accountant at the Last Mughal Emperor’s court; my grandfather supplied art in different mediums to the East India Company and local traders; my father built a commercial calligraphy practice in the 1980s. I learnt under his guidance and later shaped Likhawat into a studio for customised calligraphy, teaching and design-led products.
Likhawat has personalised invitations for Bollywood weddings and special occasions, produced calligraphy for brands and collectors, and taught students across the world. The studio has worked on stone, metal, canvas, walls, sarees, fabric, ceramics, wood, cars and paper.
Beyond commissions, teaching remains central. My practice workbooks are designed to guide students step by step, with enough detail and illustration for serious self-learning.
